So the measurement of price-inflation right now is fraught with methodological and epistemological difficulties, not to mention political interests. There is no 'objective, value-free' way to do it: one has to make decisions about what goods will come in the basket, how much quality of products has improved, one has to take into account substitutions and so on, and there is no 'objective' way to do this. Moreover, price-inflation is not measured in a counterfactual way (prices rose this much ...

Does anyone know of any more 'Misesian' views of the price system and market process? To clarify the distinction, someone who would think of economic calculation as a pure externality of the numerical divisibility of money would be 'Misesian' in my sense, whereas someone who viewed it as some sort of indirect 'information transferring' process would be Hayekirzerian.

Enjoy.

* note I didn't say 50th year anniversary. BTW, does anyone know the proper term (if one exists) for "month"iversary? It just bugs the shit out of me when I hear someone say "we just celebrated our 3 month anniversary."

It is indeed impressive how rapidly the economists who failed to predict this crisis — or predicted the wrong crisis (a dollar crash) — have been able to produce such a satisfying story about its origins. Yes, it was all the fault of deregulation.

There are just three problems with this story. First, deregulation began quite a while ago (the Depository ...

I'm having a little trouble with one point on ABCT, and I was hoping somebody around here could help me work through it.

As ABCT is described, it almost always frames the boom of the business cycle as being caused by artificially low interest rates. Since interest rates are a measure of the availability of capital, it makes sense to me that low interest rates could fool entrepreneurs into thinking that there was more available capital than there really is. Ergo the unsustainable boom.

I was wondering what events in world (economic) history Austrians tend to see as confirming their ideas the most, i.e. how the 'canon' of Austrianism views history.

A couple of obvious ones are:

- the fall of socialism

- the Great Depression

- the current financial crisis

- stagflation in the 70s

- the rise in the gold price after the last connection with gold was cut off in the 1970s

Over the past few months it has become increasingly clear that the contraction has spread throughout the entire economy. In other words, this is a true Recession. No amount of guarantees of the stability of the financial system will encourage increased economic activity. This is not simply a crises of confidence.
