PostSubject: A video of people who recovered from another cult   Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:47 pm

Hey, I thought this might be useful for the parents and such. I found this video on YouTube that has the stories of people who were involved in and recovered from the "Scientology" cult. I don't know how many people have left the cult yet, but as time goes on and FDR grows bigger I think we will see it more and more.

EDIT: I thought it was interesting how at the end the one guy says something like "I think about it now and realize its crazy to think a kid would need a 'coach' to talk to his parents."

It makes me think of Stefs listener sessions.

Thanks for posting this video here. Even though it is about Scientology and a religious cult, rather than FDR, there are some similarities between all cults and the ways they operate. I think parents will find it helpful in many ways, especially the Q and A session at the end.

Warning:
Both families mention the Cult Awareness Network. Since the film was made, the Cult Awareness Network has changed hands. Following a legal battle, the original CAN was bought by the Church of Scientology. So, if you are looking for help from a cult information organisation, do not contact the Cult Awareness Network.

Clever move!

Wikipedia explains the difference between the original Cult Awareness Network ("Old CAN") and the organisation under its new ownership ("New CAN"). Here is a quote from the Scholarly Assessments section:
wikipedia wrote:
Margaret Thaler Singer, in her 2003 book Cults in Our Midst: The Continuing Fight Against Their Hidden Menace (Revised and Updated Edition), stated that most of the information offered by the "New CAN" would probably not be the warning or help callers would have received from the "Old CAN" in the early nineties.[71] As far as the "experts" were concerned that people might be referred to by the "New CAN", most of them were what she would call cult apologists.

Where are the best current resources for information on cults?

The most current resource is this site. Many people here have written about FDR - Conrad, QuestEon and Danny particularly.

Resources on cults in general are mentioned by conspeclst26 in these posts (and maybe more):

ExyPhylo posted this useful link:

I would recommend Cults In Our Midst by Margaret Thaler Singer. It covers several decades of research which show the similarities between the structure of cults and how they operate.

None of the cult books mention Freedomain Radio, yet.
