PostSubject: FDR#926: The Evangelical Turn   Sat Dec 01, 2007 2:28 pm

Quote:
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

This was a very creepy podcast. I wonder when Nathan will be knocking on my door to tell me the good news.

for those of us who have wondered at what point exactly the FDR'ers actually become happy and free after their deFOOing and therapy, we have the answer: in #926 Stef declares them doctors, with more knowledge and insight than anybody else has had in the history of the world.

Yes, that's right, I'm talking about Greg, Nathan, Tuttle, James and all of 'em. They are now healthy and Stef now tells them that this is not their end journey: they still have an 'unbinding positive obligation' (whatever that means)...

Stef tells them to go out into the world and spread their knowledge to heal the world for they are the only ones who can do it...

This isn't a bible quote, right? This is Stef imitating the style and parodying the content of the bible to suit FDR, right?

Also, here is a possible definition of "unbinding positive obligation:" a self-contradictory term indicating a compulsory action that you have the option to ignore. Smile

Ah. Thanks. Well, I'm not going to listen to the podcast, so I'll figure out what you guys mean by "creepy" in the discussion. (Had this been a quote from his podcast, that would have been creepy! And culty!)

I find the idea of someone coming to my door and telling me about the good news of UPB to be really creepy.

it's really how Stef announces it in the podcast too: 'we now have the truth, we have its proof (UPB)'. it's so eerily similar to how Jesus' disciples thought 'we now have the truth, we now have the word of God'

I say to Stef one word: "Physician, Heal Thyself."

what that means is that they have to parade the sandwich-board T-shirts and face the lions wearing the T-shirts (I mean the clan, not the lions). But *first* they have to buy the T-shirts--even though Stef cannot enforce: only shame, coerce, bully....

Well, HE can't. Haven't you noticed that Stef is holed up in his Mississauga digs like somebody under house arrest? Is *he* out there decked out in an fdr hoodie, preaching to the mall-walkers and the Chinese food takeout guys in benighted, dreary, world-armpit "Sog," as it is known? ( He does have 3 bathrooms-- and I bet xina is making him clean every one every day as punishment for not bringing home more bacon--and also to get him out of her hair.)

ach, I think I should stop posting for now. I have a mean migraine--and I am mean.Razz

indeed. they have to become posterboys for the cause, like Jesus' apostles

I also wonder why he is not trying to enjoy more of the multiculturalism that he seems to be so fond of. surely there is more of that in Toronto than in 'Sog' (nice term btw)
but he did say that he looked forward to having the chance to prance around in the new T-shirts etc. so as to strike up conversations, so he is not hypocritical about that, just slightly daft...

Indeed. Well, you can feel much more important in the Sog and have three bathrooms and all --and even the view to spot the (sad, old, militia of two) Papadopoulouses attempting to breach the castle walls..

but he did say that he looked forward to having the chance to prance around in the new T-shirts etc. so as to strike up conversations, so he is not hypocritical about that, just slightly daft...[/quote]

yeah, sure: it is below zero in the Sog right now. Just where is Stef gonna wear his T-shirt--to the public baths?

And if I'm correct on this-- people will *not* ask questions--- the logo looks like an advert for a tree-planting ceremony or the United Way or something... nobody will give a f....

I know how I'm processing this weirdness.

The certainty of Stef is so seductive. Seriously. When I listened to the first 7 minutes of this podcast, all the old feelings came back from when I used to listen to FDR almost non-stop when I first discovered it. The old, quasi-ecstatic, blissful feelings especially as I walked through the woods listening on my iPod, the cozy feelings when I would listen as I practiced Bach and Beethoven downstairs in the basement. When I felt like Stef was talking to me.

I know how I'm processing this weirdness because I think I know now how Greg and Nathan et. al. feel. That sense of certainty can be extremely heady, fills the emptiness inside, soothes the aggravated soul burdened with too many questions. Stef gave it to me, and in spite of all the bullying, put-downs, psychologizing, etc. he still gives it to them.

In Jungian psychology, we could say that stef has mana .

Last summer I parted ways with FDR. The illusion, the happy feelings, the sense of rightness and certainty were all shattered by my ex-hero Stef when he posted podcast #759. I never thought I'd say this, but I think it broke my heart.

Its all part of the growing up process I suppose. One has to give up one's hero's eventually and stand on one's own two feet, finding the truth for oneself, not having it spoonfed to one by a charismatic, crystal blue pair of eyes.

But oh man....that heady taste of that feeling was mine for just a few seconds when I listened to the beginning of podcast 926. In my mind, the sun was shining, FDR was it and the world was a place where I could have the "slow burning rapture", as Joseph Campbell put it. It was the good old days again, and my finger was on the trigger...of the gun of philosophy.

Now Stef wants us all to inculcate virtue (or, atleast, the FDR brethren). I remember a time, some time ago, when Stef said that having the best argument, being the best debator, being right--these things don't win others over to being a libertarian. Being happy, and showing everyone that by your philosophy you are happy, this is what wins people over.

Game over.

Scott
