PostSubject: The power of new words, like deFOO   Mon Oct 26, 2009 2:54 pm

On another forum (http://forums.infoshop.org/posting.php?mode=edit&f=29&p=33761), someone linked me to this article:
http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=27542

I'd like to quote a paragraph and tell you how I think it applies to FDR:

Quote:
One of my discoveries was that in order to create the first imprint of a word -- when you learn a word, whatever it is, "coffee," "love," "mother," there is always a first time. There's a first time to learn everything. The first time you understand, you imprint the meaning of this word; you create a mental connection that you're going to keep using the rest of your life. And to create this mental connection, you need some emotions. Without emotion, there is no production of neurotransmitters in the brain, and you don't create the connection. So actually every word has a mental highway. I call that a code, an unconscious code in the brain.

If this isn't ringing any bells, think "deFOO." Moly gets a monopoly on that phrase since it is new to people. We need to figure out a way to change the associations of this word. Stories about actual deFOO'ers and the deFOO'ed are one way, but also, I think we should think of saying things like, "What de-FOO really means is de-Family, to shun your family." Just saying that is one step. This is obvious to us, but the point is to increase the connections between "de-FOO" and "de-Family" and things like shunning.

Maybe we could even make a video called "Don't be a Foo', Don't deFOO."

I know this is sorta kinda thread jumping, but... hey... deal with it! ;-)

Quote:
It was to him that Haggis addressed his resignation letter. In it, Haggis cited not just the Church's support for Proposition 8 but the church's policy of disconnection -- the practice of forcing members to cut off ties to anyone it views as enemy of the Church -- which Davis recently denied to CNN.
(emphasis mine)

From THIS article on Scientology.

Actually, that's a really accurate comparison. Not only do they both propose abandoning families but also make up new bullshit words. Did Orwell call it or what?

Moly blows a gasket when he's compared with $cientology, but I have always thought the comparison is most apt. He's a Canadian L. Ron!
