Amusing, yes, but I would have a different take on it.
Star Wars is in fact about deFOOing through and through. (well, except the prequels which are about nothing at all).
DeFooing 'mother culture' (see 'Ishmael' the book) in terms of leaving several layers of culture behind to find the true self (Alice Miller, etc..)
Come to think of it, the way the story is told tells us a lot. Lucas would have you think it is a 'Hero Story' ala his mythology mentor Joseph Campbell . But I think it is more and less than that.
In the beginning, Luke finds himself in a dump, an orphan, slaving away a 'normal' life with its petty excitements. Everything that happens after these initial scenes is a sort of reverie and fantasy about "
What would happen if I leave?". It may or may not happen, but I would suggest it is really his fantasy due to the nature of the struggles *.
He leaves:
1. Aunt and Uncle, and 'friends'. He re-attaches to a transition figure in Obi-Wan.
2. He leaves being a wage-slave and in doing so leaves mother culture which tells him he'll be safe and content if he follows his shallow destiny (rather than his Destiny, so to speak).
3. He continues leaving things, but eventually becomes aware of a dark father figure that grows as he becomes more independent. Hmm. Why does that seem so familiar?
It is a contemplation of the promise of freedom of deFooing. The promise is that there is something greater to belong to than cheap statism and patriarchy (at all levels). But the mind plays tricks on the would-be free person. If I try to become free, won't this upset the father? The amygdala level 'thought' that understands fear of authority will always come along to challenge and rationalize away the motivation to individuate.
These tricks take the form of a fantasy about the 'evil empire' that will target him and destroy everything he will venture to love. The movies play out this fantasy as it is informed by reality. Or maybe we can just keep it simple and assume the movies are our fantasy.
Oh damn, I had a lot more to ramble about but am beat. Its a deFOO story man!
