Karen's post got me thinking: my immediate reaction to word about the swine flu was very similar to Jeff Tucker's, dismissing it as yet another government scare-tactic. but at the same time, it could be true, it could be a very serious threat with disastrous consequences. But against that, then the question is about the probability of these events and simply working from a worst-case scenario perspective is deeply problematic too (see political action based on the hype about global warming and terrorism)
