| I was looking around on the interwebs when I found this archive from '97, where a guy named Scott Nudds makes himself look silly in retrospect. http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.intel/browse_thread/thread/8772d1046b81a7dd/997b88b071910370#997b88b071910370 Exponential growth is impossible to sustain for any appreciable length of time as a practical matter. The fact that current growth is exponential means that in short order we can expect it to abruptly halt. But this is not the reason PC's will never have gigabytes of RAM. | Quote: | The reason is simple. Somewhere in the 50 to 200 megabyte range, all applications, (or at least their active portion), will reside in memory. Doubling memory may allow the entire set of applications to reside in memory, but the performance gain will be small. The larger the memory capacity, the smaller the gain. As a result, additional RAM memory will not be added. |
This PC has 8gb of RAM. |

We should kick his ass according to our abilities, and he should have his ass kicked according to his needs. |

| Funny, cause I bet high performance servers back then had at least 1GB of RAM back then. |

The beauty of idiot net trolls is that, believing they know everything, reference to the facts is unnecessary. |

Assuming I don't upgrade the rest of my comp, yeah, the gain gets smaller the more RAM I install..... but then again, that's assuming I don't upgrade the rest of my comp. |

| Funny to see this reanimated, I was a participant in the original discussion on comp C++ and comp C.
If I recall correctly scott was mostly on the C group, unmoderated, of course. I knew this would come back to bite him and I had his "prediction" (with attribution, of course) in my sig for a while.
The really sweet discussion was when he insisted that assembly language could be better and more portable than C, and so someone dubbed this new, imaginary language implementation SPASM, Scotts Portable ASeMbler.
Ah, good times.
Thanks for the memories. |
