PostSubject: is it THEFT or FRAUD or what?   Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:34 am

I just happened to come across a few "quotes" by "NonEntity" supporting related to Stefan. I did not actually SAY these things, but then, I'm a NonEntity, so maybe I couldn't have said them even if I wanted to. It's a weird set of circumstances for sure.

Y'all got any thoughts on this theft/fraud/deception/whatever?

Check out this T-shirt with a "quote" attributed to me.

- NonE

addendum: correction made. Also, although I don't remember saying this, it's possible I did. It's been a long time, this Stef thing, and all. So who knows... Does anyone actually remember me saying this?

Addendeedumdumb: Okay. It appears I DID say this. This just proves I'm an idiot. Never mind. (said in best Emily Litella voice)

I lol'd, but you forgot to put "supporting," in quotes.

It's theft if you think it is and you're not mistaken about the physical facts connected to your belief. Unless you believe in a system of property rights "intrinsic to the nature of the universe," or something like that. Theft really only has meaning insofar as it describes a belief about an action, rather than the action itself (though it may be possible to extrapolate a physical description of this action described as theft from said belief).

Well, first of all... I AM AN IDIOT*.

That aside, for me the question is - and let me note that I probably don't believe in intellectual property rights - how does this play out when I (if it were the case, but it's not) am having something attributed to me which I DID NOT SAY. This falls outside of the concept of property rights. I think. It's more along the lines of fraud or misdirection or something. It damages my reputation, but then, my reputation is not something I own, it's something that others hold in their own possession.

It's just an interesting conundrum.

* as I said, I DID say what I am quoted as saying.

Well, as larger-than-life personalities pass into legend, it often happens that apocryphal quotes--which they clearly did not say--are attributed to them in an attempt to capture their essence in some way, from Galileo's alleged refusal to completely bend to the church to George Washington's admitting blame for the death of a cherry tree.

I guess the question that needs to be resolved here in your case...is it fraud, or merely hero-worship? Very Happy
