PostSubject: JamesP's Corruption   Wed Jan 11, 2012 4:13 pm

Well, I just found out beyond a shadow of a doubt that JamesP actively goes out of his way to read the private whisper conversations of other people in the chatroom. I've long suspected that, but now I know. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Point of clarification: do you know that he actually has to go out of his way to read whisper conversations? I think in some chat software, they are just visible to members with administrator status.

In any case, it would be nice if they made clear that whisper conversations are not truly private. Out of respect for members' privacy. Nevermind people plotting the demise of FDR or whatever, people could be sharing intimate details of their personal lives, that they don't want James knowing (nothing wrong with that).

It's not by default visible to JP. He has to download chatlogs. And he does. Regularly.

He spends his boring, lonely nights downloading chatlogs and searching them for his own name, invading the privacy of others while no doubt condemning the government for the same act. It's not explicit anywhere that whispers are not private. It's not in the terms of agreement, not in the chatroom itself.

It's a bit creepy if you ask me.

dude, you're saying this because James wrote that somebody had loaned you their account to post from and because James supposedly could only know that by checking those chat logs? Could not somebody else have told him or could he not have found out in another way?

Also, why do you keep posting on FDR? You were first banned quite a long time ago, then came back, got banned again, came back, were banned again, and then came back again? I mean (and knowing very well that I have no moral authority in this respect since I did something similar years ago), that's kind of weird and problematic and definitely not the right thing to do either.

No, he didn't find out from someone telling him. He explicitly said he found out via the chatlogs. The only place in the chat that I said anything was a whisper to a member who wouldn't have told JP.

Anyway, I keep coming back because I like the chatroom. Lots of really smart, really nice peeps in there.

well sure, that doesn't change the fact that i like it in there. i have some really good convos in there, pretty regularly.

also, 1 more reason i'm sure JP reads whispers: when someone asked him after I got banned how he knew it was me, he said "I wouldn't want to give away my secret." Sounds a bit more fishy than "Somebody told me"

I tried to log into FDR a few minutes ago and was a little surprised to see that I had been banned. When I saw your post it cleared things up quickly. In a whisper I was telling another member how I was planning on smearing James on the forum, the whole nine yards, pointing out his psychological defenses, his non-UPB compliant behavior (ROFL, ie his inconsistency between what he says he values and what his actions show), his authoritarian behavior, then to top it off in the typical FDR style by recommending he get some therapy. Razz

Peace,
Serpentis Lucis

This does seem pretty slimy on James' part. It's not the absence of a truly private communication channel -- it's trivial to find one of those elsewhere. It's the invasion of privacy. The reading of chat messages that wouldn't have been written there had members known they weren't private.

It's becoming clear what they mean when they say "you don't know the whole story" behind a banning and then don't provide evidence despite requiring other members to back up accusations with evidence. They don't want to blow their secret and lose a rich source of information.

I think the best thing we can do is publicise this information -- as they should have. **JamesP and others can and do access private communications made through the FDR website.**

Yes, people should be aware that their whispers can be read by others. I don't believe there is such a thing as a "truly private communication channel". All computer activity is stored in some way and chatroom conversations are generally recorded as chatlogs, which are particularly important for the online protection of children. Moderators can read the conversations in real time, or later in the chatlogs.

Moderators can also hide their online status - does anyone else remember seeing Molyneux suddenly appear in the chatroom when he was the main topic of discussion? Ever wondered how he just happened to arrive at those moments?
